What is PORTUGAL DECODED?

PORTUGAL DECODED started out in 2023 as an English-language weekly newsletter to help non-portuguese speakers - and perhaps some portuguese speakers :) - keep up with current events in the country.

 

It has now evolved into this website as a guide to all things Portuguese. Whether you're a longtime resident, a digital nomad, or simply curious about this beautiful country, this website aims to be your passport to understand Portugal's news, history, and events.

Who writes PORTUGAL DECODED?

My name is Diogo Lemos, I’m a 40 year-old Portuguese Political Scientist, husband and proud father of two girls.

I’ve lived almost half of my life outside Portugal.

 

I studied journalism in the UK, spent time across Europe and Asia and ended up doing a PhD in Political Science at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.

After returning to Portugal in 2018, I started working for the Portuguese Government and I have held different positions in ministerial cabinets until the end of March 2024. I am now back at academia and teaching Political Science at ISCTE, in Lisbon, alongside writing PORTUGAL DECODED.

Why I started PORTUGAL DECODED?

I started PORTUGAL DECODED in November 2023 for two main reasons: to inform non-Portuguese readers about what is going in my home country and to follow my passion for writing (especially writing in English, which is something I don’t get to do often in my day job).

​

The aim of PORTUGAL DECODED is to inform, in the most simple, objective and short way as possible, about the main political, social, economic, cultural and sports news in Portugal.

​

No clickbait, no agenda, no bias – just the facts in a five minute read!
