The board of daily newspaper Diário de NotÃcias has also been sacked.
This Tuesday, the Global Media Group (GMG), whose titles include dailies Diário de NotÃcias, Jornal de NotÃcias, and O Jogo, business weekly Dinheiro Vivo, radio TSF, and lifestyle magazine, Evasões, went ahead with a mass redundancy process. In an internal communiqué, the group justifies the terminations with the "very complicated financial situation that has resulted from the management of recent months, the impact of which has been public".
Along with the mass redundancy process, the director of Diário de NotÃcias, José Júdice, and the rest of the management will also leave the group. The interim management of Diário de NotÃcias will be taken over by Bruno Contreiras Mateus, current director of Dinheiro Vivo, who will ensure the transition for three months before he too leaves GMG.
"Realising that this process has a major impact on Diário de NotÃcias' operations, we will do everything we can to minimise its consequences. The truth is that the current situation was unsustainable both from a financial point of view and from the point of view of fairness towards the professionals who have kept Diário de NotÃcias' editorial flame alive for so long. That's why this decision was necessary, which also aims to launch a renewed project for DN that will be developed in close co-operation with the current editorial staff."
This round of redundancies comes two days before the Journalists' General Strike, scheduled for Thursday, March 14.
